Thirty years after I was born prematurely at just seven months, about a hundred or two hundred hours ago, I resorted to violence in an attempt to resolve the thirty years of conflict between my mother and me. In a moment of complete loss of control, I struck her and even threw urine at her—a deeply wrong and shameful act. Through this outburst, I faced the most painful truth of my life: beyond my pursuits of entrepreneurship, financial freedom, and building a family through adoption, the core of my struggle has always been the irreconcilable difference between my mother’s and my ways of seeing the world.

 

I thank Pastor Oluyemisi Joy-Felicia Oladejo, whose presence in my life came through my friend Jessie. I am grateful for Joy-Felicia’s arrival today—she is like a messenger from the “God Developer,” guiding me toward the right realization: that to heal a “woman’s” wound, it takes a woman who truly understands her.
